Hidden Creeks & Streams

Picture
Funded by Open Circle Foundation in conjunction with Deep Oakland, the Hidden Creeks project explores our human presence in nature, using artwork and musical performances situated along the waterways that thread through the urban infrastructure. Most are hidden, buried in concrete culverts and occluded from public view and interaction. Since 2009, we have been recording musical videos along the creeks, improvising with the water sounds and creating actions centered around environmental awareness. Sample videos: Damon Smith (bass), Ma Jie (pipa).

Over several years, I have had a wonderful time working with Oakland artists on this project, with stellar plein-air music videos by Darren Hawk, and adventures along the creeks and in the studio with Saskia and Christine. Together we produced a commemorative "Creek Discovery Box" with souvenirs and artworks inspired by the creek experience.
